The triumph, a first major trophy in nine years for Arsenal under Wenger, brings to five the number of FA Cups the Frenchman has won, drawing him alongside Sir Alex Ferguson as the manager who has won the competition the most.

Wenger said: “It is a relief because we were under an enormous amount of pressure today.

“And because we produced a demonstration into how not to start a Cup final.”

That was in reference to the storming start the Yorkshire side made, streaking into a 2-0 lead inside the first eight minutes through goals from James Chester and Curtis Davies.
