Barnsley sweat over Gerhard Struber’s future in key transfer window week
Struber’s Oakwell contract has a release clause, thought to be £1.8m, which makes the Championship club powerless to stop him if a rival suitor chooses to pay it.
After sacking Chris Armas earlier this month there is speculation New York Red Bulls are ready to pay the compensation and hand the 43-year-old Austrian a three-year contract. Struber began his coaching career in Red Bull Salzburg’s youth set-up, and coached their feeder team Lierfering.

Hide AdAfter improbably saving the Reds from relegation last season, Struber returned home to ponder his future amidst links to the vacant Watford coach’s job. The Hornets opted for Vladimir Ivic and Struber returned, but it has been a difficult start to the season, taking one point from their opening three Championship games without scoring.
For all the talk of supporting the coach in the transfer window, Struber still hopes for a couple of key signings after selling Jacob Brown for around £2m.
Football League clubs have until 11pm on Monday to sign players from overseas, although domestic transfers are possible for a further 11 days. New managers can join at any time.
