Temperatures were due to drop below freezing again last night across the region as the Met Office issued severe weather warnings for parts of Scotland and the North East today amid warnings of as much as 10in (25cm) of snow over hills as blizzards develop.
Forecasters said some snow showers could affect the Pennines further south in coming days but are warning more severe snow could hit Yorkshire on Friday, coupled with strong easterly winds.
The bad weather will mean the cargo ship MV Danio which ran aground on Saturday on rocks in the Farne Islands, three miles off the Northumberland coast, will stay put for at least a week.
