Special guest as church marks milestone
Dr John Sentamu preached at the end of a weekend of festivities to mark the occasion.
Work started in July 1858 to restore the church from its dilapidated state. Using a young architect, William Hey Dykes, it was extensively re-built over a period of 13 months at a cost of 1,600 before it re-opened on August 28, 1860. Other events during the weekend included an organ recital by Dr Simon Lindley, the organist of
Leeds Parish Church, on Friday evening, and a church
open day on Saturday with floral decorations and
guided tours.
