MP raises household waste concerns

HUNDREDS of thousands of tons of waste could be used to provide energy for homes and businesses in the district, believes Conservative MP Anne McIntosh.

She will promote the idea as part of the controversial debate on fracking, through the Government’s Select Committee on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs which she chairs at Westminster, when the new Environment Secretary, Liz Truss, attends its meeting next month.

Ms McIntosh, MP for Thirsk and Malton, said: “Such a policy would solve two problems - what to do with the mountain of waste we generate and contributing significantly to providing sources of energy.”

She said she was concerned about the disposing of water used in the fracking process and the risk of pollution.

“The EU is trying to increase recycling rates. We need to look at how we can convert our waste products into energy.”
