Pete is just dotty about Le Tour in Yorkshire
Pete’s Bank View Cafe at Langsett, near Penistone on the edge of the Peak District, is slap bang on the route that the famous cycle race will follow on the second day of its passage through Yorkshire this summer. And to make sure his business grabs the attention of the huge number of fans and media who will flock to the event, he has painted red polka dots across its bright white walls.
Pete chose the eye-catching design as a nod to the polka dot jersey that is awarded to the race’s best climber, known as the ‘King of the Mountains’.

Hide AdHe tackled the painstaking paint job himself, putting in about 20 hours over the course of several evenings.
Pete, a keen cycling fan who has owned the cafe for six years, said: “I wanted to come up with something that would be visible to all the media helicopters that cover the Tour.
“Red polka dots seemed the best way to go, as the riders will pass us on the day’s hill climb finale.”
Asked how he had managed such perfectly-judged circles, Pete modestly replied “with careful use of a spirit level”.

Hide AdHe has also assured his neighbours that the cafe will be reverting to its conventional colour scheme once the Tour leaves Yorkshire.
n The Yorkshire Post is encouraging people to embrace the Tour de France’s yellow theme by getting involved with our #yellowyorkshire multimedia campaign.
Event ideas for businesses, schools and families include everything from holding a Tour-inspired bake-off to an exhibition of a yellow-dominated garden.
The campaign will culminate in a Wear It Yellow Day on July 3, when we will ask people wearing yellow to work or school to donate £1 to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
