Fears for 500 jobs as pit faces closure threat

MAJOR geological problems could mean that one of the region’s last remaining deep coal mines could be set to close, having a “huge impact” on a South Yorkshire community.

Maltby Colliery in Rotherham has been producing coal for more than 100 years, and is one of the few remaining deep pits not only in Yorkshire, but in the whole country.

However, the presence of gas, water and oil in the development of a new face has fuelled uncertainty over the site, which employs about 500 people.
