Lord Young of Dartington, as he became in 1977, died aged 86 in 2002.
The SSE was launched with founding donations from HSBC Holdings plc, the National Lottery Charities Board and the Esmée Fairbairn Charitable Trust.

Hide AdThe SSE welcomed its first group of students in January 1998 and ran from Bethnal Green in East London with its first programme consisting of a 22-student cohort.
The SSE says its mission is to address inequalities and social exclusion by supporting social entrepreneurs from all backgrounds to transform their talent into real social outcomes.
SSE supports social entrepreneurs across the UK, Australia and Canada.
The Yorkshire and Humber school ran its first learning programme in 2009.
Based in Leeds, it specialises in start-up support for SSE students across the region.
